Following on from yesterday's post, it is also worth mentioning that the hyperactive Christian Roessler at EconPhD.net has also produced rankings of universities and research and professional organisations, as well as breakdowns by economic sub-discipline (using JEL codes).
The top five ranked economic departments globally, in terms of journal publication impact, were Harvard, Chicago, MIT, UC Berkeley and Princeton - no real surprises there. The highest ranked UK university was the London School of Economics, which came 12th.
Amongst organisations, the top five were the World Bank, IMF, Federal Reserve Board, Minneapolis Fed and New Fork Fed. The London-based Institute for Fiscal Studies came an impressive sixth place, ahead of the Chicago Fed.
These scores were based on Kalaitzidakis et al's 2002 impact rankings, and extensive economic journal data based on the EconLit entries for 63 journals from 1993 to 2003: about 65,000 articles in total. The methdology is explained online. Roessler says that his are "the only consistent rankings at the subdiscipline level", and "it is hoped that these rankings are particularly useful to prospective PhD applicants. They should also help publicize specialized expertise at smaller departments."
