Sky News this morning is leading with several dramatic home videos and interviews from China of the widespread property theft occurring as officials let developers seize land and bulldoze people's homes, often without adequate compensation: China Land Grab Exposed
The human cost of China's booming economy has been exposed by a Sky News special investigation. Our reporting team managed to take rare footage of people being forced out of their homes to make way for new developments.
Many of the victims are now living in tents on the land where their homes once stood, having been evicted and then seen them demolished.
The local media is afraid to report what has been happening, but the people affected have spoken out. One woman said: "They're stealing our homes, it's theft, just theft. The poor have no human rights, no way of surviving. We've been everywhere for help."
Other people have shot footage including pictures of an elderly man being carried out of his home sobbing. Other film shows villagers being ousted from their land, with groups of hired thugs attacking residents and meeting stiff resistance.
While many of the poor now live in slums, others are making huge sums of money from China's property boom. There is a land grab on an unprecedented scale and the full force of the state is being used to stop any opposition.
Here is a link to the Sky News six minute video report. It's a moving acount; anyone interested in the underside of China's economic boom should watch it...
These issues indeed need to come to light and be exposed. But see the attached link http://edition.cnn.com/2005/LAW/06/24/scotus.property/

I am not in any way condoning the property seizures going on in China, but Jason C (in his comment) is right to link to the CNN article showing that this sort of thing goes on around the world. I am not aware of any government that does not, at least occassionally use its emminent domain powers to take over private property. The problems in China are that the rights given to those who inhabit the property "owners are so minimal and that the takeovers often are for no real governmental reason other than to line certain peoples' pockets. There were more than 70,000 protests in China last year and many of those stemmed from property appropriation.

Regular readers of the blog will authentic handbags know that I'm a huge Lady Gaga fangirl, so I think it's fairly
clever. It's not the most interesting thing she's ever done, designer handbags but playing with fashion and blurring
the lines of social acceptability are two things that are integral to her public image, and not only does a Sharpie’d Birkin combine those things effectively, but it has
managed set tongues replica handbags wagging all over the internet.
