Another post on Germany. A recent piece by BNP Paribas economists asks Is there a radical change in the wage-fixing system? (PDF). It notes the trend decline in unionisation, and concludes that:
Germany’s wage-fixing system is evolving towards more decentralised bargaining arrangements.
..It is hard to say whether the decentralisation of pay bargaining will benefit employment. Empirical and theoretical studies on the subject have produced contradictory findings. ...Greater decentralisation in pay bargaining in Germany will probably mean widening wage differentials.
...The decentralisation of pay bargaining is well under way in Germany. It will introduce greater wage flexibility and will favour employment, particularly among the least qualified segments of the labour force.
Germany’s wage-fixing system is evolving towards more decentralised bargaining arrangements.
